Does anyone know about DexCool being in trouble for their coolant
found to be destroying gaskets and such things? My father told me
about this a few days ago and with my Malibu needing the engine
replaced, if they are liable at all, I would like to know.

Also, I live in south central PA and was wondering if anyone has
advise for me on my Malibu. It is a 1999, LS, 108,000 miles, V6, J-
type engine, pretty good condition... etc. Is this worth fixing? It
has been sitting for about nine months now, I just don't have the
money to fix it, but my church is willing to help me out, but only
for about $1200.

Any questions any of you have of any advise would be greatly
appreciated. Also, if anyone lives near me and would like to help
replace the engine once I get it, I have a place to work in, I just
don't know how to do the job on my own.

Not sure on the 99, but I have an '01 and had to have the intake gaskets redone in 2003. $$$ I was told to expect that again within 3-4 years because of the Dexcool.
 
I'd be interested to hear what you find out.

I am still using dexcool (orange stuff).  I would like to use the normal antifreeze (green) but I have also heard that the seals do not like the change after being exposed to dexcool.  I have also heard that dexcool will wear out your seals faster.  Anyone else know the facts to help out Paul and I.

I still use dexcool and have no problems with it. I
use it without dilution.

Interesting subject because I was just thinking of changing mine in my 1998 Yukon.
I have the original factory DexCool from 1998, never been  changed.
My truck only has 24000 on it, so I am thinking about doing a flush/fill.
I was told that the DexCool that is sold now is chemically different from the one that is in my truck from problems in the past.
I also wish I could switch to the green, but was told you can't do that from various sources.

After changing out the intake gaskets on my 97 "ho" I
don't have any problems with the dexcool, and I now
have 175K miles on the clock.

What I read is if your system is working correctly..
"Closed System, and no air is leaking into your system."
It will last 5 to 10 years.
 
But get a air leak, and it turns to sludge and it stops up everything.
Can be a major expense to get it flushed out.
 
That is why I have left mine alone all these years.
It looks good, and I have not touched it since 1998.
But I am questioning if it is time now or should I wait longer since
I don't have a lot of miles on my vehicle.

Sludge is right. I had a flush done. Within a few
thousand miles there was sludge. I replaced the
radiator, flushed again. More sludge. I just
replaced the heater core and heater hoses and will
probably have an acid flush done.

Also, I was told by another shop that the sludge often
happens when you add green coolant to the system when
there has been dexcool in there. I guess once you
have dexcool, you aren't supposed to switch, unless
you have a complete replacement of all of your
components.
