I've got a 1992 Astro Cargo EXT with the V6, for which I just bought a rear disc brake conversion kit from The Streetrod Manufacturing ("TSM"), Inc.
They offered 2 types of caliper: one style incorporating the emergency brake, the other style not incorporating the emergency brake. I got the one that integrates the emergency brake.
I realize it's very unlikely that I'll ever snap an axle, but I've seen it happen to plenty of other people. If I didn't use the caliper that integrates the emergency brake, I'd have to use a pinion- mounted brake. If I did that, and an axle snapped, I'd have no emergency brake.
I got my axle flanges turned-down (to the recommended 6 1/8 inches diameter), and the rotors initially seemed to fit perfectly. The brackets went right on without any problem.
Anyway, my question has to do with fitting the caliper. The emergency brake mechanism appears to bind against the leaf spring and against the bracketry that secures the axle to the spring. I think I need to move the rotor about 1/2 inch (or thereabouts) outward.
Has any of you ever having done this conversion (or knowing someone that has) encountered any similar clearance issues?
If so, how were these clearance issues successfully resolved?
THANKS for whatever help you're able to provide!
