I found this while looking through old digests
and thought you folks might be interested. It also
helps to back up some of my statements I've made. (I
edited the layout a little and rounded the figures to
the nearest whole, but that's
it.)
talked to a border patrol officer once in maine
back in the early 1990,s and he had a caprice probably
a 92 or 93 and he said top speed was about 150 to
160mph unless he turned on the light bar which cut his
speed down to around 140 to 145mph to due heavy power
draw creating a drag on the engine.

I SERIOUSLY DOUBT the truthfullness of that
officer. It takes a lot of power to get a car with as high
a drag coefficient like the Caprice (especially
with a lightbar) to get going that fast. And there are
very few places where even an officer could get up to
that speed.

Maybe if he put a blower on with
2.56 gears, but that's unlikely.

In comparison,
a new 320hp LS1 powered Z28 is drag limited to just
about 160. It is a much smaller car with a lower
coefficient of drag.

you have to remember that i am talking about the maine - canada border and i
have been up there and it is mostly flat and straight roads so the probablity of
reaching high speeds is definately there.

I stil doubt that a 92-93 Caprice would be able to run those speeds. The more
powerful Impala SS can't even achieve that.

you know it could be quite possible.. i have an 84... 305 with the THD350... and 1st gear for me was at 4200rpm and 80 km/hr, second did me up to a little under 90 mph/140 km/hr, and then in third i've had it up to about 45 degrees before the little pin that stops the spedo needle from droping straight down, and it was 45 degrees from that in 3rd gear at about 3500rpm... so these things could be done, running a 305 with RV cam, lifters, pushrods and new intake with stock carb.
