My wife was going to work this morning and the lumina would not start. I went out to check it and everything looked good. Lots of power, lights and everything was good. The problem seems to be the starter, it did not even click or attempt to roll over , just nothing, like it wasnt even there.

Does a starter just go out like that? We have had no indication of problems with it, it has started every time with no problems.

I am not much of a mechanic but if it is the starter I would like to attempt to replace it myself. Anyone have any photos and instructions on how to do this job?

Thanks!

Engine Is Not Running Smoothly

Hello,
I have a problem with my 1981 Chevrolet Caprice V6. While driving a constant speed, for example 35 mph. the engine is not running smoothly. It is like it is searching. I know it’s not an fuel/carburetor issue because my car is running on gas and I have a LPG (like propane) installation. While driving on LPG the carburetor does not do anything, just passes the LPG an regulates the amount of LPG by changing the throttle valve position. Both on gas and on LPG the problem remains. I replaced the sparkplugs, cables, rotor, distributor and air filter already. Also checked the timing, everything seems to be OK. I hooked the car up to a troubleshooting device. There are no trouble codes. I’m thinking about changing the ECM but since I am from the Netherlands it is not so easy to get the parts here. And because I am not sure I hope the is somebody who knows what causes this problem. Can anybody help me with a solution?

Regards, Erik Ganzevoort

Carb Problems?

I have an 86 caprice classic with a 305. The problem I think is in the carb somewhere. The first I noticed it, I started the car and it would run as long as I feathered the gas pedal. As soon as I put it in gear it would die. I changed the filter at the carb. No luck, same problem. I changed the fuel pump thinking it wasn't getting enough pressure, same problem. I noticed that if I kept the car running long enough for the choke to open it would drive but barely. Still really rough. Now today I went out to take a look at the choke system and it would not start, unless I prime the carb, and then it just dies after about 5 sec. I disconnected the fuel line and it is pumping plenty of fuel. Any help out there? My dad could fix anything, i was learning from him, but he passed away last year and I have no one else to help me short of a repair shop. Please any suguestions?

1999 Tahoe Problems - A Couple Of Questions

Just bought my first one (LT, 4X4, 87K on the clock, 5.7L) and it's great to drive but I believe I have some common problems. Can anyone shed some light?

1) 4WD indicator lights -- Sometimes they light. Sometimes they don't. Right now I'm in 2Hi. When the indicator light is not on, occasionally I can press the 2H button and it stays on for awhile then it goes off. Other times I press it and nothing lights. I'm afraid to try it in 4H for fear it might get stuck in 4H.

Before I purchased the truck, I pressed all the buttons to make sure 4X4 was working and even though the indicator lights were out at the time, I could hear the shift and 4X4 worked.

Switch? Shift motor? or ???

2) Headlights stay on when I start the truck. I know some models have daytime lights but mine seem to be just as bright in the day as they are at night. When I turn off the ignition, the lights go off. I don't own a Canadian model so I'm kind of confused.

I took the truck to an auto electric shop and he subscribed to a database listing possible causes but all he could find was the problem. The only solution was to purchase a switch (not sure if it's an OEM part) that when installed, allows the driver to override the "Daytime" mode.

The only sensor I see that should adjust for daytime and night mode seems to be in the back of the rearview mirror. I plan on shining a flashlight on it tonight to see if the light s adjust back into what should be the "daylight" mode.

3) Coolant. I learned about the intake leak a bit too late. Just topped coolant off with the orange Havoline coolant. will this stuff eat away at the intake gasket like the OEM stuff?

Thanks in advance for any insight!!!

Ok, I've been having issues with my car not wanting to stay running, I. Troubleshot the computer, to figure out that there was a problem with the MAP sensor, got that replaced, and its still doing the same thing, and one of my good friends who is an uncertified mechanic, told me it might be my spark plugs, well I got those and the wires replaced, and still the same issue, and the fuel filter was all rusted, so I figured id swap that out for a new one just in case, and that didn't fix the problem either, can someone give me some info as to what it might be?

hi my name is shawn, i have a 98 chevy blazer, my 4x4 does not work. i bought the truck a year ago. And i'm not sure what the previous own had done, but today i layed under the truck and was looking at my trans case and i noticed that there is a pigtail like wire that is unhooked and it has a cap stuffed into one of the holes. i know its a vacum line and i'm pritty sure that is my problem but i'm not sure why the previous owner would unhook it. when i engage the 4x4 i put it into nutral and press the 4x4 button and it will click and kind jurk like it went 4wheel drive. So i took it to a friends shop and put it on a lift and drove it in the air just to see if the front wheel roll and they don't. i really would like to fix it before winter comes. thank you

96 Chevy Caprice

Hey guys,

Thanks for lettin' a Texas hillbilly like me into y'all's forum. I've got a couple of questions for you Chevy nerds out there. I've got two problem codes popping up on my car and I need a direction to go in to try and get them fixed. I really don't want to be chasing gremlins. I have a 96 Chevy Caprice with the LT1 350 under the hood. Generally it purrs like a kitten, but lately it hasn't been firing up right away like it used to. One of the codes I'm getting is P1171 "System to lean under acceleration". It's not just under acceleration though that I have a problem. Sometimes at idle it feels like it's missing, especially when I flip on the A/C. Suddenly then I'm losing power, and once it even died on me everytime I tried to fire it up. Once it warms up though, it's fine. I tried changing out the fuel filter, but that didn't help. Please tell me my fuel pumps not going out.

Problem numero 2: I get a code about the Evap system. Code P1441 "Evap System Flow during non-purge". Ok, so I need to understand the Evap system a little and I need to know how to fix this problem. Is it a vacum leak?

Any help y'all can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike S.

Corvair Reverse Starter Using Corvair Transaxle

I'm looking for a reverse rotation starter for a reverse rotation cammed Corvair engine, using a corvair transaxle, NOT VW,. The engine is now in front of the transaxle facing toward the front of the car. The starter would need to be installed in the standard position on the transaxle, it just needs to rotate reverse compared to the normal rotation. I understand the issues dealing with turning the corvair transaxle backwards, regarding the ring and pinion coast side engagement. I've found using an electric powered fluid pump and spray nozzle aimed at the ring gear solves any wear problems. I had a machine shop build the original starter, but lost the starter in subsequent moves, and am now putting the car back together. Any source information would be helpful.

Hello All,

I have some suburban specific questions…perhaps I can get some answers here

We currently own a 2009 Acura MDX and 2004 Nissan Armada…I’d like to trade the armada in for a 2010 suburban. But first….

1) Is there going to be a 2011 Suburban…I can’t see the model on GM’s drop down menu’s here in Canada…if so, when is a major model chance expected?

2) How does the Suburban handle in the snow/ice….we live in Northern Ontario and winters here can be harsh....to say the least.

3) Is the LTZ worth the expense? (over the LT with some additional options).

4) At the risk of igniting a flame response….how is the chev suburban's reliability…in terms of break downs and repair expenses? (We’ve had a series of Honda’s and Nissans and have had great reliability…very few repairs). What should I expect from a chev product?

Thanks all!

Northern noob

Engine Upgrade

Hi All,
I'm working on a 1979 Base model El Camino, it originally had a 267 engine in it but when I go it the engine was toast, so I bought a rebuilt 350 to put in it but I can't get the motor mounts to line up. The motor mounts that are suppose to bolt onto the frame won't line up with the motor mount brackets on the engine, so i took the motor mounts off the frame and inserted the single bolt that connects them to the motor mount bracket and tried to line them up but again they don't line up. The first attempt I could get one bolt in to connect the two halves but the other on would be about an inch and a half away from lining up. The second attempt was with the two halves connected and I set it in as level as I could but neither side would line up with the bolt holes on the frame. Does anyone have any idea what to do to correct this problem? I've checked with every source that I can find to ensure that the motor mounts and the motor mount brackets are the correct parts so as far as I can tell that's not the problem. Is there a modification or some brackets that are needed to put the 350 in where a 267 was?

I have a 2008 Suburban LT. In the past couple of months we go out to start it and the truck is dead. We can jump it and starts right up. I have taken the car in and they said that the battery is fine. Anybody know if there is some sort of wiring problems with these trucks. The connection looks clean and most of the time starts no problem. Also my wife turned off the stereo and now can not get it back going. We have about 50,000 miles on the car.
Replace Hub (again)

I have a 1997 Malibu. I replaced both wheel hubs 6 months ago. The first one only lasted 3 months. The second (passenger side) is now shot and must be replaced again. I replaced both with white box parts. The guy at the store says that's not uncommon -- for white box to last less than a year. Is this true? That sounds very odd that anyone would sell parts (especially when it comes to a safety) that would last so little.

So I'm going to replace it again this weekend. I can do white box ($100) or premium ($220) and there doesn't seem to be any middle ground. I'm trying not to put a lot of money into this car (1 year, maybe 2 max). I'm still suspecting that maybe the bearing I installed earlier were from a bad lot.

Thoughts?

Headers For 73-77 El Camino

Does anybody know of a good set of headers that will bolt up to 350cid 73-77 El Caminos/Chevelles without modification? I am about ready to throw in my rebuilt motor and possibly would like to get some new headers. The set I have now have been on the car since 1993 and are wonderful except for the fact that I bottomed out many years ago and flattend the 2 bottom primary pipes on both headers. The builder that put them on also had to do some mods on the pipes to get them to clear some spark plugs and the starter. If I could find some good quality headers to bolt on that would be great.

I have a 91 Caprice with a 305 and TBI. It has been sitting in my yard for over a year not running. It's now time for me to fix it and I've narrowed it down to the fuel system,(it runs so long as I am spraying starting fluid or carb cleaner into the TBI.) Other than checking the relay(s) and the fuel pump, is there any other thing I can check? I'm fairly sure the FI is run by the computer, but is there any way to bypass it or an easy way to check the computer since I can't drive the car to a mechanic?
